Fifth Grade Writing
The purpose of fifth grade writing is to continue to build upon the skills and strategies that students already have as writers. We will begin our school year with a unit on grammar, usage, and punctuation so that the remainder of our year can focused upon producing well-organized, strongly written writing with purpose and depth. The following units will be: narrative, persuasive, and informational.
We will be utilizing the Lucy Calkins Units of Study Curriculum, which utilizes Writing Workshop. Each day we will begin with a short lesson, followed by an activity in which all students participate. Afterwards, students will have a significant amount of time to engage in the writing process, which is the best way to get better at writing. During this time I will conference with individuals or small groups to provide the direct instruction they need in order to be successful. At the end of each period, students will have an opportunity to share their writing in order to receive peer-feedback.
